The directors of the Marin Healthcare District are elected at large by the residents of the District, which
encompasses all of Marin with the exception of Novato and portions of West Marin. District directors serve 4-year
terms without compensation and strive to promote the health and welfare of the residents of the communities
they serve.

Larry
Bedard, MD
Dr. Bedard, elected in 2006, currently serves as the Chairman of the Marin Healthcare District Board.
He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Michigan. He has practiced
emergency medicine for more than 30 years and worked at Marin General Hospital's Emergency Department
from 1979 to 2001. He is an active advocate on issues related to medicine at the local, state and national
levels. Dr. Bedard was elected and served as President of the American College of Emergency Physicians
(ACEP), President of the California Chapter of the ACEP, Trustee of the California Medical Association,
and President of the Marin Medical Society. He is a father to two daughters and enjoys photography and
travel with his family. His lifelong ambition is to be in the Oval Office when the Unites States president
signs the bill bringing universal healthcare to the nation.

Sharon
Jackson, MBA
Sharon Jackson was elected to the Marin Healthcare District Board in 2004 and reelected in 2008. She
is past chair, 2007-2008, and is currently serving as Vice Chair. Jackson holds an MBA as well as a
Master's degree in Guidance and Counseling. She has more than 25 years experience as a health care business
consultant, providing strategic planning and change management services to hospitals, clinics, and rehab
facilities, primarily on the West Coast. Jackson has also served on the Marin Mental Health Board, the
Marin Women's Commission, the Healthy Marin Partnership, and the California Association of Local Mental
Health Boards, as well as Artisan's Gallery, serving two terms as chair of each. She has four adult
children and five grandchildren with whom she spends as much time as possible.

Jennifer
Rienks, PhD
Dr. Rienks was elected to the Marin Healthcare District Board in 2006, and currently serves as Chair
of the Lease and Building Committee and as Board Secretary. She has her master's degree and her PhD
in social psychology, and since 1996 has worked for the Family Health Outcomes Project at UCSF. Dr.
Rienks has served as research director for projects to prevent HIV and to reduce black infant mortality
disparities, evaluated programs to prevent cancer and diabetes, and is currently conducting a
needs assessment for California Department of Health Services' California Children's Services program.
She also conducts training for staff from local public health departments throughout California on topics
ranging from community needs assessments and intervention development to interpreting trends in health
outcomes. Dr. Rienks has lived in Marin since 1986, and she and her husband have a 15 year old daughter.
During what little free time she has, she likes to garden and hike the spectacular trails of Marin.

Clever, MD
Dr. Clever has lived in Marin since 1968 when he came to be an Air Force physician at Hamilton AFB.
He was elected to the Marin Healthcare District Board in 2006 and has served as Chair of the Management,
Finance and Audit Committee since then. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees at Stanford
University and did his residency there, finishing as Chief Resident in Medicine. He practiced internal
medicine-primary care in San Francisco for 35 years, served for three years as Chief of Staff at what
has become California Pacific Medical Center, and taught at UCSF School of Medicine for more than 30
years. His wife and daughter are also physicians. He ran in the Dipsea Race 31 consecutive years and
finished "in the shirts" seven times.

Harris
"Hank" Simmonds, MD
Dr. Simmonds was raised in Sacramento. He joined the Army in 1956, spending most of his duty time with
the 3rd Armored Division in Germany (with Elvis). Upon return to the US, he finished college and Medical
School at UCLA. In 1971 he began Obstetrics and Gynecology practice in Marin, where he remained for
35 years, retiring in 2006. During that time, he calculates delivering about 16 tons of babies at Marin
General Hospital, lost much sleep, but enjoyed it. He was Chief of Staff at MGH from 1983 to 1985. He
has two wonderful children: Gail, who is in women's apparel, and Raymond, a PhD in Physics working for
NIST. Their mother, Alyce Simmonds, died in 2006.
While enjoying his retirement, Dr. Simmonds was asked to run for the Marin Healthcare District Board
in 2008. He won.

Lee
Domanico Chief Executive Officer Since 2008, Lee has served as the CEO of the Marin Healthcare District. Domanico
holds a BS degree (Magna Cum Laude) in Industrial Engineering from the University of Michigan and an
MS degree in Industrial Engineering from Stanford. Before joining Marin Healthcare District Board in
2008, Domanico previously held executive leadership positions in Chicago (CEO, Columbus-Cabrini Health
System), with Tenet Healthcare in Los Angeles (CEO, USC Hospital) and Philadelphia and in the
San Francisco Bay Area (President/CEO, Merritt Peralta Medical Center and CEO, El Camino Hospital).
He is a published authority on hospital-based healthcare management and is well respected for his innovative

Cox
Chief Financial Officer Mr. Cox has extensive experience in
healthcare financial and operational management and has served in senior leadership roles in a variety
of organizations including community hospitals, integrated delivery systems, an academic medical center,
medical groups, and insurance operations. Mr. Cox served with Sutter Health from 1982 through 1996 in
a variety of roles, including Chief Financial Officer, and played a key role in the growth and development
of that organization into one of California's premier integrated delivery systems. Mr. Cox has led successful
turnaround and performance enhancement initiatives in very complex environments. Mr. Cox has a BS in
Accounting from Loyola Marymount University and an MBA from the University of Dayton. David and his

Jon
Friedenberg Chief Fund and Business Development Officer Friedenberg provides the overall
direction for all activities related to business development, fundraising, marketing, planning, government
relations, media relations, and external communications for the District. Friedenberg also oversees
the Marin General Hospital Foundation as it develops plans and strategies to increase philanthropy.
Most recently he was Vice President of El Camino Hospital, from 2002-2010, where he founded the Genomic
Medicine Institute, South Asian Heart Center, The Fogarty Institute for Innovation and the Center for
Technology Integration. Mr. Friedenberg received his Bachelors Degree from UC Berkeley, a Masters Degree
from UC Davis, and was a fellow at Wexner Heritage Foundation. Friedenberg, who is married with two
children, enjoys backpacking with his family along Marin's trails and coastline during his time away

Maria
Countouriotis Executive Assistant
Ms. Countouriotis has been the District's Executive Assistant since March 2008. Her varied career in
the public and private sectors began with ten years serving as one of the first female police officers
in San Francisco. In Southern California, she was an executive in the business and construction fields
and served as the City Code Enforcement official. Returning to Northern California, she was a Program
Manager at Hewlett Packard, then an integral employee at Sonoma State University, where she had a myriad
of administrative and financial responsibilities that included authoring policies and procedures to
implement new programs. Ms. Countouriotis' son is a graduate of Wharton, a U.S.M.C. Captain who has
served three combat tours in Iraq, and is completing his Masters Degree for his teaching credential.
Her daughter is an instructor in rehabilitative massage therapy and a biologist who is currently doing

Theresa Gianfortune
Chief Human Resources Officer Theresa Gianfortune will serve as Marin General Hospital's Chief Human Resources Officer. Ms.
Gianfortune's background includes over 20 years of human resources experience in
organizations ranging from New England to Southern California. Most recently, she was the
Vice President of Human Resources for Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and Miller
Children’s Hospital. Prior to that, she was the Vice President of Human Resources for
Children’s Hospital of Orange County. In addition to her extensive healthcare experience, she
is the recipient of the 2006 National Human Resources Association ("HNRA") of Southern
California Compassional Excellence Award. She earned her bachelor's degree in
organizational management from Daniel Webster College, New Hampshire.
