West Marin Medical Center and Marin General Hospital Mourn Loss of Dr. Eileen Gleber

GREENBRAE, CA — Dr. Eileen Gleber, a primary care physician on the staff of Marin Healthcare District’s West Marin Medical Center in Pt. Reyes Station, died July 31, after a long illness. She was 62.

Dr. Gleber earned a B.S. in Biology at the University of New York (1982), while working as a laboratory technician. She was accepted to Mayo Medical School in 1998, and was the Frances Wylie Condit and Charles M. Condit Scholar there. Her post-graduate training included internships with the USC Multi-Site Family Medicine Residency Program (LA County Hospital, University Hospital, St. Luke Hospital and Avalon Municipal Hospital.) She was board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and was a member of the American Medical Society and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

After serving as Co-Medical Director at Avalon Municipal Hospital and Clinic in Avalon, CA, Dr. Gleber joined the medical staff at Petaluma Health Center and Petaluma Valley Hospital in 2004. She joined the West Marin Medical Center in 2007.

Patients and colleagues there embraced her energy and spirit. “She came to Point Reyes when the clinic was in danger of closing and bridged the gap until Dr. Hamblin joined the practice. She devoted her life to her patients in a way that is uncommon today. She will be sorely missed,” said Dr. Michael C. Whitt, who started the West Marin Medical Center as a private practice some 40 years ago.

“Eileen was an improbable, compassionate, and astonishing physician and colleague,” said Colin Hamblin, MD. “She gave care equal to three physicians. I am very lucky to have known and worked with her and will greatly miss her presence, her guidance on patient care, and her counsel on life.”

Dr. Gleber had a lengthy history of volunteerism, including service in the US Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic (1991); in the HIV Education Program at New York’s St. Clare Hospital, Spellman Unit (1993); in the Katmandu, Nepal Family Medicine Clinic (1998) and as a volunteer for Doctors of the World (1997).

“She was the kind of family doctor we all want to have—caring, altruistic and devoted to her patients,” said Joel Sklar, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Marin General Hospital. “She filled a critical role for the community of West Marin. Marin Healthcare District will have a hard time finding someone to fill her shoes.”
