Healthcare Reform

Health Coverage Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA)

In March 2010, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) – which you may have heard commonly referred to as “Obamacare.” The ACA provides the framework, policies, regulations and guidelines for implementation of comprehensive health care reform by the states and aims to increase the quality and affordability of health insurance, lower the uninsured rate, and reduce the costs of health care.

Whether insured or uninsured, Californians now have more choices and stronger coverage than ever before. Covered California™, our state’s health insurance marketplace, is where you and your family may get financial assistance to make coverage more affordable. It offers you the ability to compare plans, apply for coverage, and beginning October 1, 2013, enroll for coverage effective January 2014.
