About Us

Formerly known as Marin Hospital District, Marin Healthcare District (MHD) is a publically elected nonprofit entity responsible for the operation of Marin General Hospital (MGH).

As one of 70 healthcare districts established by the State of California in 1946, our mandate is simple—to promote the health and welfare of the residents of Marin County. The District encompasses all of Marin County with the exception of Novato and portions of West Marin.

The mission of Marin Healthcare District is to:

  • Enhance the provision of quality health care in the communities served by the District
  • Be a strong advocate of the public for quality and reasonably priced health care
  • Provide a forum for discussion of health care issues affecting communities served by the District
  • Fulfill the role set forth for District oversight in the Bylaws of Marin General Hospital Corporation, including approval of major transactions, board appointments, and oversight of established performance goals for the hospital
  • Monitor compliance with facility and related obligations of MGH Corporation under the Lease of 1985 and amendments thereto, including pursuit by the District and MGH Corporation of seismic compliance plans and implementation
  • Be an advocate for health care needs and interests of the residents of the District and to support community-based health care and wellness services in the District
